Wire product: buy nickel silver (copper-nickel-zinc alloy) for industrial applications
Nickel silver wires from Sundwiger Messingwerk are diverse and versatile, so they are used in numerous industries. We offer specialised nickel silver wire products that are suitable for various applications due to their excellent properties.
Nickel silver wire consists of an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. This material has a silver-like colour and high strength. The alloy composition of nickel silver determines its properties and is specified according to a standard in Germany. However, the hardness and corrosion resistance of nickel silver are high for all alloys, making it an ideal material for many applications. Wire products made of nickel silver are used in various industries, for example:
1. Resistor material

Applications of nickel silver wire ND12 | ND18
Nickel silver wire grades ND12 and ND18 are wires made of a copper-nickel-zinc alloy, which have a high tensile strength and good corrosion resistance..
Nickel silver wire ND12 is often used in electrical engineering, in the jewellery industry and in the manufacture of musical instruments. It is used in jewellery, such as rings, bracelets and necklaces, and in musical instruments, such as guitar strings and wind instruments, but also in electrical wires and cables.
Nickel silver wire ND18 is mainly used as a spring material for various applications in electrical engineering and precision mechanics, for example for electrical contacts, switches, relays, plugs, measuring and writing instruments, watches as well as other precision parts.

Nickel silver wire in various delivery presentations directly ex works
We offer our nickel silver wire in different delivery options to meet your individual requirements and technical conditions. Within each variant, different sizes are available, which you can select according to your existing equipment and desired dimensions. The following are the common delivery forms for our nickel silver wire:
Crowns
Crown sticks offer convenient handling and facilitate the integration of the wire into production or processing lines. The length and diameter of the crown stick vary according to the amount of wire. If desired, we additionally pack the nickel silver wire on the crown sticks in plastic film to provide extra protection during transport and/or storage.
Coils
Another delivery form for nickel silver wire is rings. This form offers several advantages, such as easy handling, neat storage and less tangling of the wire. The rings are available in various sizes and diameters and are additionally packed in suitable containers or boxes for extra protection and convenient storage.
Spools
To ensure convenient handling and storage, the wire is wound onto coils made of either plastic or metal. The size and weight of the coils vary depending on the amount of wire required.
Coilless winding
An alternative possibility is to wind the wire without a conventional spool. This is used especially for larger quantities where a spool is not practical. The wire is tightly bundled and provided with a protective layer.
Cardboard drums
For safe transport and protection from damage, the nickel silver wire is also packed in robust containers made of cardboard or paperboard, the cardboard drums. The drums are available in different sizes and capacities – depending on the quantity of nickel silver wire.
Rods
For specific applications where wire in the form of rods is required, we offer nickel silver wire rods. These are usually supplied in precise lengths to suit your individual requirements.
Acropaks
Supplied as Acropak on a pallet.

Nickel Silver Wire FAQ: Frequently asked questions about our nickel silver (copper-nickel-zinc alloy)
What are the special features of nickel silver as a material?
Nickel silver is not real silver, but an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. The properties of nickel silver therefore depend on the exact alloy composition, which is standardised in Germany as follows: the copper content is between 47 and 64 percent, the nickel content between 10 and 25 percent and the zinc content between 15 and 42 percent.
However, all nickel silver alloys have in common that they are very hard and corrosion-resistant. Most nickel silver products are spring-hard, which means they have high elasticity and can return to their original shape after being bent. In addition, the following properties make the alloy of copper, nickel and zinc a versatile and popular material in various industrial sectors:
Colouring: Nickel silver has a colour similar to silver, but it is usually slightly greyer than real silver.
Hardness: Compared to real silver, nickel silver is harder and more resistant. The alloy is therefore less susceptible to scratches and wear.
Corrosion resistance: Nickel silver is more resistant to corrosion than the individual components copper and nickel. It is less susceptible to rust and oxidation.Melting point: Nickel silver has a lower melting point than real silver. It can therefore be melted and processed at lower temperatures.
How is nickel silver wire produced?
Nickel silver wire is produced through a process consisting of several steps.
- Alloy composition: First, three different metals (copper as the base, nickel and zinc) are mixed in the right proportions.
- Melting: The components are heated and liquefied in a melting furnace.
- Casting: By using the continuous casting process, casting produces wire pieces with no gaps and no welds. This is done by simultaneously forming eight strands on our modern equipment. The strands are then reduced to square wire on rollers with several stands.
- Cold rolling: The wire is then further processed in a cold rolling mill to reduce the thickness even further while increasing the tensile strength and hardness of the wire. This step can be repeated several times to achieve the desired mechanical properties.
- Annealing: After cold rolling, the wire is heated in an annealing furnace to remove the stresses created and refine the grain structure.
- Tensile strength and hardness testing: The finished wire is subjected to tensile strength and hardness testing to ensure that it meets the required technical specifications.
- Further processing: The wire is subjected to further processes such as cutting, bending, tinning or other surface treatments, depending on its intended use.
Can nickel silver wire become cloudy?
Yes, nickel silver wire can change in this way under certain circumstances. Cloudiness refers to a change in the metallic surface where a cloudy, dull or darker layer forms. This can occur due to oxidation of the metal. If nickel silver wire is exposed to environmental conditions containing oxygen or other chemical substances in combination with moisture, this can lead to oxidation of the wire and to clouding. To prevent or minimise such a change, there are various protective coatings or surface treatments.
For which industrial applications is nickel silver wire used for?
Nickel silver is suitable for various industrial applications due to its unique properties. Some of the most common uses for nickel silver are:
Jewellery making: due to its high resistance to corrosion and tarnishing and its silver-like colour, nickel silver is often used in the jewellery industry. It is used to make rings, necklaces, earrings, bangles and other jewellery.
Production of musical instruments: Nickel silver is also used in the production of musical instruments such as trumpets, saxophones and flutes. It is used to make mouthpieces, valves and other parts because it offers a good combination of durability, corrosion resistance and sound quality.
Electronics: Nickel silver is used in the electronics industry because of its electrical conductivity. It is used to make circuit boards, plugs, contacts, switches and other electrical connectors.
Production of cutlery and crockery: Nickel silver is also used in the production of cutlery, crockery and cutlery parts. Due to its corrosion resistance and durability, it is often used for silverware and other decorative elements in the catering industry.
Watchmaking: Nickel silver is often used for watch and jewellery cases due to its silver-like appearance. The material offers a cost-effective alternative to real silver while being robust and durable.
Optical and medical instrument manufacturing: Nickel silver is also used in the manufacture of optical instruments such as binoculars and telescopes, as well as medical or surgical instruments and braces. It offers a good combination of durability, corrosion resistance and suitability for close tolerances.
These are just a few examples and the list is of course not exhaustive. Nickel silver is also used in other industries (for example: automotive, aerospace, electromechanical systems and many more).
